What is Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10)?
Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10), also known as ubiquinone, is a naturally occurring, fat-soluble compound present in virtually every cell of the human body. It belongs to the quinone family of molecules and plays a central role in cellular bioenergetics.
Unlike essential vitamins, CoQ10 is synthesized endogenously via the mevalonate pathway and is considered an integral component of normal human physiology.
Biological Context
CoQ10 is:
- Present in all tissues, particularly those with high metabolic activity
- Localized in mitochondrial membranes
- Involved in electron transport and cellular energy conversion
- Studied extensively in biochemical research since its discovery in 1957
Because dietary intake provides only small amounts, supplemental CoQ10 has been widely explored in advanced nutritional science.
Ubiquinone and Ubiquinol
CoQ10 is lipophilic (fat-soluble). Its absorption depends on digestive processes that handle dietary lipids.
During digestion:
- CoQ10 is incorporated into micelles alongside fats

- It enters circulation via lipoprotein transport systems
CoQ10 exists in two interconvertible forms:
- Ubiquinone (oxidized form)
- Ubiquinol (reduced form)
These forms continuously convert into one another within biological systems as part of normal redox cycling processes. Indeed, ubiquinone and ubiquinol interconvert inside the body after absorption. Both forms ultimately contribute to the same intracellular CoQ10 pool. Scientific literature describes this dynamic conversion as part of normal physiological regulation.

Why Formulation Matters: CoQ10 Pro Liposomal
Because CoQ10 is lipophilic, dispersion in aqueous environments can present formulation challenges.
To address this, CoQ10 Pro Liposomal is produced using a phospholipid-based pro-liposomal delivery system (LongLifeLipoTech®). This system incorporates sunflower lecithin-derived phospholipids and vegan chitosan, designed to support improved dispersion characteristics and formulation stability within aqueous environments.
Liposomes are nanoscale vesicular structures composed of phospholipid bilayers, structurally comparable to biological membranes. Due to their amphiphilic nature, phospholipids can self-assemble into colloidal systems suitable for incorporation into complex nutritional formulations.
However, conventional liposomal systems may exhibit surface charge characteristics that influence their physical stability within dispersion systems.
To address these formulation considerations, LongLifeLipoTech® incorporates a proprietary phospholipid matrix combined with vegan chitosan. Chitosan interacts with phospholipid head groups, supporting modulation of surface characteristics and promoting improved colloidal stability within the formulation matrix.
