Saffron MAG, an Unique Formulation for a Harmonious Mind

Saffron MAG is a multi-ingredient formulation combining standardized saffron extract and magnesium glycinate. Each component—saffron, magnesium, and the amino acid glycine—has been selected for its distinct biochemical characteristics. Together, they illustrate complementary pathways relevant to cellular and neural biochemistry.

Saffron: This prized spice comes from the dried stigmas of Crocus sativus L., a perennial crocus whose vivid red filaments are laboriously harvested. Chemically, saffron is rich in terpenoid derivatives: crocin, crocetin, picrocrocin and safranal (Ref). Crocin, a carotenoid glycoside, provides the characteristic deep colour; picrocrocin contributes bitterness, while safranal imparts the distinctive aroma (Ref). Because these compounds largely define saffron’s sensory qualities, the levels of crocin and picrocrocin are used as quality markers in national standards (Ref) while safranal is a key compound connected to the quality of saffron based food supplements.

Magnesium Glycinate: Magnesium is an essential mineral that functions as a counter-ion for ATP and nucleic acids and acts as a cofactor for more than 300 enzymes (Ref.). It stabilizes ATP-generating enzymes, participates in energy metabolism and protein synthesis, and modulates muscle contraction and neurotransmitter release (Ref). Chelation with glycine enhances magnesium’s bioavailability and introduces glycine as a functional component.

Glycine: Glycine is a non-essential amino acid with dual roles in human biology. It is a building block in protein synthesis and also functions as a neurotransmitter in the central nervous system. In this context, glycine’s inclusion in magnesium glycinate not only stabilises the mineral chelate but also contributes its own recognised biochemical functions.

By combining saffron’s distinctive carotenoids and volatiles with magnesium’s enzymatic roles and glycine’s structural and signalling properties, Saffron MAG emphasizes complementary biochemical pathways. While the broader significance of saffron and glycine for health outcomes is still under investigation and not established by regulatory authorities, magnesium has authorised claims in the EU, including that it contributes to normal psychological function and to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue (EFSA Register).

Saffron MAG, formulated with a phospholipid-based pro-liposomal delivery system

One of the challenges in formulating with botanical extracts and minerals is their variable bioavailability. To address this, Saffron MAG is produced with a phospholipid-based pro-liposomal delivery system (LongLifeLipoTech®), including sunflower lecithin-derived phospholipids with vegan chitosan. Such systems have been studied for their ability to improve the dispersion of lipophilic compounds in aqueous environments.

Indeed, a major approach known to maximize bio-availability of natural compounds is the phospholipid-based formulation. Such formulations are known as liposomal formulations and commercially, they come as liquid emulsions or solid formulations promoting the formation of liposomal structures (bubble-like structures surrounded by a fat-based layer) that can encapsulate the active ingredients. This phospholipid layer is similar to the cell walls in our body. As a result, liposomes are well received by the body and absorbed in higher quantities by the body, to reach the blood stream.

While liposomal formulations are a great way to deliver increased amount of supplements and drugs to the blood stream, when turning these into products, it leads to various disadvantages for the users. Liposomal products are liquid, heavy and difficult to carry. They have difficult taste. Making their taste better may come with various undesired additives. And typically they have short shelf life, even shorter after the bottle is open. Furthermore, liquid liposomal products need to stay stored at low temperature.

In contrast to the liquid liposomal supplements, liposomal promoting formulations as dry powder in capsules have no taste, they are easy to carry, and they can be stored at room temperature with a long shelf life. The quality is therefore even better since the product is more stable.
