Blueberries are a low-glycemic fruit full of anti-oxidant, blood vessel-strengthening, eye and brain-protecting flavonoids. Raspberry boasts similar anti-oxidant flavonoids, along with a couple of unique compounds: ketones, which appear to have a stimulating effect on our cells’ metabolism, and ellagitannins, which have a potent inhibitory effect on certain cancer cell lines, at least in vitro.
Research from the USDA showed that organic raspberries boast great anti-oxidant activity (which makes sense—since flavonoids and other goodies are a plant’s natural herbivory defense compounds). Also, buy and pick ripe raspberries—research out of Cornell University shows they have more of the good stuff. Pineapple is the source of the anti-inflammatory compound bromelain. If pineapple doesn’t agree with you or bothers your mouth, leave it out!
