Phytoestrogen cream Transition's for Health Inc. phytoestrogen cream is a body cream containing extracts of plants that are known to have high concentrations of phytoestrogens. Phytoestrogens are a group of compounds found in plants that have estrogen like effects in the body. They can either act as weak estrogens, or provide precursors to substances that affect our estrogen activity. Phytoestrogens can bind to estrogen receptor sites in our bodies and have either pro-estrogenic effects, or anti-estrogenic effects on the target tissues. How it affects the tissues depends in part on how much estrogen our bodies are already producing and how saturated our receptor sites are. If estrogen levels are low, as in menopause, empty estrogen receptor sites can be filled with phytoestrogens, which exert a weak pro-estrogenic effect. (Phytoestrogens may be anywhere from 1/400th to 1/1000th the strength of estradiol). If estrogen levels are high, as in some women who suffer from PMS and endometriosis, then phytoestrogens can compete with our own estrogens for binding to receptors. When the phytoestrogens bind, they exert a weaker effect than if our endogenous estrogens had been allowed to bind. Phytoestrogens supplied by this phytoestrogen cream include Red Clover, Chinese Angelica, Black Cohosh, Licorice, and Chaste Tree Berry. Ginseng is added as research has shown it to reduce vaginal dryness associated with low estrogen. For best results, phytoestrogens may be used in conjunction with Pro-Gest PC or Pro-Gest SL. Epidemiologic studies indicate a lower incidence of hormone-mediated malignancies, post-menopausal hot flashes, osteoporosis and cardiovascular disease in countries with higher consumption of food phytoestrogens (1). Black cohosh is comparable to pharmaceutical estrogens in treatment of hot flashes (2).

USP Progesterone (bio-identical progesterone) is made from naturally occurring plant sterols in a patented process developed by chemist, Russell Marker, in 1942. Diosgenin, a sterol from the wild yam (Dioscorea) root, has historically been used for the production of natural progesterone. Progesterone is produced by the corpus luteum of the ovary, and to a lesser degree from the adrenal glands of both sexes. Progesterone has multiple roles in the body. Primarily, it is required for successful implantation of a fertilized egg, fetal development, balancing the effects of estrogen, a myriad of intrinsic biologic properties, and as a precursor to other steroid hormones. Although gynecological studies have not validated it's use in PMS, Christiane Northrup M.D. reports significant benefit in this condition when combined with diet, exercise an other supplements. She also notes an indication in endometriosis, dysfunctional uterine bleeding, bleeding secondary to fibroids, menopausal symptoms including hot flashes and headaches and osteoporosis related to menopause (1). Depending upon the symptoms, a half-teaspoon of the cream can be applied twice/day to soft areas of the skin such as breasts, neck, face, abdomen, inner thighs and inner arms, alternating sites with each application.

Christiane Northrup's book Women's Bodies, Women's Wisdom, is an excellent reference. For menorrhagia she recommends oral progesterone 100mg four times a day for sever symptoms and 50mg, two times a day for mild cases, from days 14 to 28 of the menstrual cycle.
